Do you wish you knew more about the farming practices used on your farm? How can you best support your farmer tenants? Do resources exist to help improve communication between you and your tenant? What are some creative ways to structure leases for the benefit of both parties?

Landlords and farmers each have valuable resources that the other needs. Working in partnership and opening the lines of communication is better for both parties, and the land. Jennifer Filipiak and Jami Cox will discuss basic leasing structures, common land improvement/stewardship scenarios, and how to bring the two together.

    Jennifer Filipiak
    Executive Director
    Driftless Area Land Conservancy (DALC)

Jennifer is the Executive Director of the Driftless Area Land Conservancy (DALC), a nonprofit organization that protects, maintains, and enhances the health, diversity and beauty of the natural and agricultural landscapes of the driftless area of southwest Wisconsin. Jen just joined DALC in November. Prior to working for DALC she served as the Midwest Regional Director of the American Farmland Trust, where she worked collaboratively with farmers, farmer organizations and government agencies to overcome barriers to conservation practice adoption and advance common ground solutions for agriculture and the environment. While at AFT, she developed their national “Women for the Land” initiative which addresses the obstacles that women landowners, particularly those who do not farm but lease their land to farmers, face in accessing conservation programs and resources. Filipiak brings more than 15 years of project management experience in conservation and sustainable agriculture having previously worked with organizations such as the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, The Nature Conservancy of Iowa, and the Lake County (Illinois) Forest Preserve District. Filipiak holds a B.S. in Ecology from Northern Michigan University and an M.S. in Wildlife Ecology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
