Over the past five years, farmers and landowners have noticed a great deal of interest in cover crops and how they benefit soil and profitability. Much of the work to prove these benefits has been ongoing for over fifteen years. While commodity prices were high, it was “easy” to try “new” things, like cover crops. Many farmers and landowners noticed improvements in their soil after one or two years. However, as commodity prices have dropped, farmers have become cash strapped, and their desire to “take risk” has greatly diminished. Many farmers who rent or lease farms believe that we are back to a point where “mining the soil” and putting on enough nutrients to “get by” are back in style. Do the landowners know any different as long as the rent money comes in on time? What about improving the soil? What about soil health? What about long term benefits to the ecology? What about long term economic benefits?

Speaker Dave Robison will look at the short and long term benefits, both ecologically and economically,of the use of cover crops, and how both are important to farmers and landowners.
