International Study Tours

Explore Fjords and Farms on the 2018 International Study Tour to Norway

The Chicago Farmers will be traveling to to Norway, leaving June 9, 2018 on Icelandair for a seven night, eight day adventure to Oslo with a return from Bergen. We will be leaving in early summer instead of late spring due to cooler temperatures at our usual late April departure.

Our air carrier, Icelandair, flies from O’Hare International to Oslo with a short stop in Reykjavik, Iceland. On the return, we reverse the process, only from Bergen, located in the western part of lower Norway. Scandinavia Tours is our ground operator and has prepared an interesting preliminary itinerary.

The arrival day, Sunday, will be spent in Oslo, Norway’s capital and largest city, with departure on Monday to visit the headquarters of NRF, an 11,000-member dairy cooperative, moving on to Lillehammer for the night. On Tuesday, we’ll get to see the Olympic Village and an open-air museum, which depicts Norwegian farm life over centuries.

Wednesday, we leave our hotel in Lom and get a ride on the Flam Railway with the evening at Hardanger. Thursday, we visit a fish farming facility in the morning and in the afternoon, we will take a fjord cruise with overnight at Botnen. Friday, we reach Bergen and enjoy our farewell dinner before our return on Saturday.

Repeating, the O’Hare International departure is at 7:30 p.m. on June 9, 2018, arriving Oslo, at 12:20 p.m. on June 10, 2018. Our return is at 1:00 p.m. on June 16, 2018, arriving to Chicago at 6:30 p.m. the same day.

Check your calendar and put in these important dates. The Norwegian Vikings were among the first to explore North America. Now it’s our turn to explore Norwegian farming and culture. You’ll find the price is right. $3,400 for Icelandair Boeing jet economy service and the fine ground service by Scandinavia Tours. The details attached tell you how to sign up. As of September 15th, previous travelrs are able to register. After September 15th, we’ll open registration to other Chicago Farmers.

Since 2002, members of the Chicago Farmers have traveled to a variety of foreign destinations, including countries in Central and South America, Europe and Cuba to focus on both the culture and agriculture of those destinations, which differ significantly from Midwest row crop production agriculture. In April of 2017, the most recent group of Chicago Farmers travelers went overseas to Austria for a week. While there, they toured several farming operations and orchards and received an overview of that nation's agricultural scene. Cultural features visited were the major cities of Vienna, Groz and Salzburg. The group also enjoyed their visit to several of the locations used for filming the movie "The Sound of Music".
